Top 300 Movies O All Time #261 David Copperfield (1935)

MGM plucked with George Cukor's help a star when casting Freddie Bartholemew as the title character as a child. A faithful adaptation of the Dickens classic, "David Copperfield" feels a little dated but is held together by a great demonstration of ensemble casting.

Edna Mae Oliver, Lewis Stone,Basil Rathbone,Lionel Barrymore,Maureen O'Sullivan,Una O'Connor,Elsa Lanchester, and Madge Evans. An impressive class of character actors. But this film is best remembered for the brilliant against type casting of W.C. Fields as Micawber and alternately Roland Young as the wretched Uriah Heep. Lots of fun.
