GARBO LAUGHS! That was the slogan MGM used to sell "Ninotchka". Ernst Lubitsch directed this classic comedy featuring a strict Bolshevik Greta Garbo learning to let her hair down in Paris. Garbo as was almost always the case pulls it off.

Billy Wilder co wrote the script with Charles Brackett and Mr. Wilder, being a native Hungarian litters the film with shots against Stalinist Russia, especially the show trials prevalent at the time. Quote from the film: "The last mass trials were a great success. There are going to be fewer but better Russians."

Melvyn Douglas plays Leon who is entranced with Garbo's character and it involves one of my favorite lines of all time. Leon: "A Russian! I love Russians! Comrade, I've been fascinated by your five-year plan for the last fifteen years."

There is a great supporting cast and it is notable in that Bela Lugosi has one of his few non horror related roles as a Russian diplomat comicly trying to appease Garbo's character.
