TOP 300 MOVIES OF ALL TIME: #238 " SEARGEANT YORK " (1941)

This movie is cut and dried. Gary Cooper won his first of two Oscars for his portrayal of Sgt. Alvin York, a hillbilly sharpshooter, a born again Christian conflicted in taking the lives of any man, even in war. It is of course, biographical, loosely based on the actual war hero.

It is directed by one of the all time greats in Howard Hawks and has the able support of Walter Brennan,Dickie Moore,Joan Leslie,Ward Bond and many more. Released in July 1941, the pacifist leanings of our hero represented the United States attitudes at the time as the rest of the world was at war and at the same time in his actions justified taking up arms against an aggressor. The Academy Awards Ceremony of course was the following spring and an America at war propelled him to that Oscar in an inspirational performance embodying the reluctance of and necessity of defending a nation from attack.
